Classic Cruisers of the Mississippi Gulf Coast is the first of several photo essays by automotive photojournalists Bruce W. Smith, Larry Walton and Tim Walton (Smith-Walton Productions) about the largest antique/classic car event in the country drawing upwards of 5,000 classic and custom cars.

Photojournalist Bruce W. Smith recently released A Recollection of Journeys, Short Stories of Outdoor Travel and Adventure from Alaska to Australia.

Smith’s coverage of automotive and marine adventures has taken him to some extremes on our planet. In this book he recalls some his more memorable expeditions.

This book will appeal to off-road enthusiasts as many of the miles (or should I say kilometers?) were gained behind the wheel of four wheel drive vehicles.

From the snows of Yellowstone to the jungles of Guatemala and Brazil to the desert-like sands of Australia’s outback, Smith and his expedition teams put these 4×4 machines to the ultimate test.

Smith also gives us a peaceful respite between overland adventures with his account of a 325 mile trip via pleasure boat in the Alaskan Inland Passage.
Experienced and would-be adveturers will appreciate Smith’s account of the sights and sounds and the challenges to man and machine. He also reveals some of the secrets to selecting gear for such journeys.

Pro Rally Subarus captured in the heat of action

Race photographer Bruce W. Smith recently released an amazing set of his archived images featuring Subaru rally cars from the SCCA Pro Rally series.

Being in exactly the right spot to get the right shot also got Smith the job as the Mitsubishi team photographer, but he wasn’t about to let Lovell and the other Subie drivers get by without firing off a few well timed frames.

Subaru enthsiasts are sure to apprectiate these historic photos of their guys tearing up the American back roads.

Rock Pits & Dump Trucks

Some of our best shoots happen on the fly. Recently while covering a bridge building project I asked the dump truck driver if I could hitch a ride to the quarry and get some loading photos.

“Sure,” he said, “hop in.”

Truck driver Jeremy Williams was on the radio with the loader operator before we reached the pit. A variety of rock sizes were available. A less expensive quarry run (unsized) rock was the choice for the driveway base we working on.

After taking on a load, we headed up the ramp out of the pit for the scales. I was surprised to learn that the quarry office was unmanned. Operations were being watched via live video feed at another location.

Once off the scales, Williams jumped out of the truck to grab his paperwork off of the printer in the small job shack on the way out of the gate.
